The Principal York Twilight tea is an evening alternative to traditional twilight tea, a lighter, later afternoon tea experience including finger sandwiches, scone selection, jam and playful petit fours with a sharing cocktail tea pot.
The Principal York is a wonderfully luxurious British treat, and is just a one-minute walk from York Rail Station.

Sandwich were dry cakes and scones were ok. We had to ask for the Prosecco & coffee which were part of our package. Service was ok a bit slow but staff friendly. The place it’s self was very nice

Treated my husband for his birthday as he'd never experienced Afternoon Tea before. Sat on low sofa and chair which made it challenging to eat. Didn't feel there was enough staff as we had to ask for utensils and our tea not to mention the wait for milk. Food lovely but service not brilliant. I know that they hadn't been reopened long but disappointed with service. I am sure with the full complement of staff the whole experience would be tip top.

We were given a lovely table within the garden room. Our vegetarian afternoon tea was delicious. Our waitress was very friendly but unfortunately as our meal went on she became less attentive and we had to ask for a few things that took a long time to arrive. Other than that our whole experience was great.

Have been here numerous times before, unfortunately this time the service was well below par. The food & setting was great & felt very reassured with the COVID precautions that’d been put in place; couldn’t fault it. However, the service of the gentleman that was serving us let the whole thing down. I called ahead to say we were running 10 mins late which he said wasn’t a problem, I did at the time think his telephone manner was lacking somewhat but didn’t think too much of it. We arrived to be greeted (after what felt like a little too long to be waiting given there were only 2 other tables) by the man spoken with on the phone & gave my name again for the booking. He seated us & a few mins later came back with afternoon tea menus & asked us whether we wanted tea, no options were provided but we ordered our favourite teas. A few mins later he came back to say one of the teas wasn’t available & instead offered an alternative. However it turned out he’d forgotten who was having what & it was actually one of the other teas they’d run out of. We were served our teas & starters shortly after. After finishing these we waited for 45 mins until he came to the table to ask whether we wanted to order afternoon tea - after I reminded him that’s why we were there (& after all we’d already had the afternoon tea starter!) he said my booking was only for tea & cake. If this had been the case, we hadn’t even had the cake yet after being there for 1 & 1/2hrs?! I showed him my afternoon tea confirmation & when we’d arrived I’d said I had an afternoon tea booking. He then asked if we wanted more tea & went off to arrange the afternoon tea. The tea never arrived & we instead had to ask the waitress for more when the afternoon tea finally arrived. At this point we never saw the waiter again, I assume he'd finished for the day. The worst thing was that he never apologised for his mistake. It was all rather disappointing customer service & put a dampener on my mother’s birthday.

we had afternoon tea which I've enjoyed several times before, always a winner. Staff are very attentive and courteous.

Surroundings excellent, lovely decor. Service charming but a little slow. Enjoyed the cakes but the sandwiches were dry and very poor quality and selection. Bread was stiff and should be soft. Cream portion was only sufficient for one and it had separated. I was given a replacement and this was the correct amount for 2. Overall would not recommend the afternoon tea experience. I was treating a friend who is terminally [ill] and expected a much better experience.

Beautiful room sat in the large window for afternoon tea. The service was perfect, and we were very well looked after. Afternoon tea was perfect, especially with a glass of champagne!

Excellent social distancing arrangements at our afternoon tea for 9 of us. The menu was varied and interesting, we all enjoyed it, however we'd have preferred a child's menu for the 9 year old as some of the items were not to a child's taste.
